February 2023
The year ahead is gathering pace with an exceptionally busy February including travel out of the country. H+R were commissioned to investigate and survey the American Naval Monument in Gibraltar with a focus on the masonry and gilded bronze embellishments. The massive structure is a well-known landmark in the town and used as a stepped thoroughfare by many citizens every day
Back in the UK, an interesting selection of castles were surveyed for a range of issues including Broughton Castle where a boat was needed to navigate the flooded cellarage and also Lancaster Castle for the Duchy of Lancaster. Stately Homes included Uppark for the National Trust and also Burghley House, the greatest Elizabethan treasure house in England
Growing involvement in providing Heritage Statements has led to a large commission for 70 Brook Street in Mayfair
Work for significant independent schools continues with major commissions at Winchester, Charterhouse, Oundle and Brentwood. The investigations mainly focus on refurbishment and new build projects with an emphasis on damp-proofing and damp penetration remediation. Similar projects have also been confirmed for Oxbridge Colleges at both St John’s Oxford and St John’s Cambridge, as well as hospitals – coincidentally both at St Thomas’ London and St Thomas’ Stockport
H+R’s Northern and Eastern offices are heavily committed on project work with stand-out schemes for the former at the old Duckworth Essence factory with its magnificent terracotta frontage for the Church of Scientology in Manchester and even more unusually, the Pit Head Baths at the Big Pit National Museum of Mining for the latter
