Samuel Clayson
Building Pathologist
MSc

Background
After early studies in the arts, Samuel completed training as a banker stonemason. This led to a 19-year career in contracting, with the vast majority of that time spent in the historic building conservation sector
During his career, Samuel was fortunate to manage and work on a number of high-profile projects across the Southwest, including Bath Abbey, Glastonbury Abbey, Milton Abbey, St Giles House, and Wells Cathedral. This was alongside a multitude of small-scale, technically challenging projects on ecclesiastical, public, and privately owned properties
Progressing from team member to project manager and ultimately contracts manager, he developed a well-rounded, practical understanding of the defects and challenges faced by historic buildings, as well as the appropriate treatments and conservation techniques.
Alongside his professional work, Samuel earned an MSc in Historic Building Conservation, and he is also part of the teaching team for the “Conservation of Ruins” course at West Dean College and has delivered lectures for the Building Conservation programme at the University of Bath
Areas of Practice
Samuel joined H+R SOCOTEC in 2025. Although stonework has been at the heart of his craft and knowledge throughout his practice and studies, he has also developed a deep appreciation and affection for vernacular building styles and traditions. His passion extends to the meticulous replication and sensitive conservation of these structures – encompassing not only common building practices but also ornate design and decorative elements
