Martha Raymer

Building Pathologist

BA(Hons), MSc

Background

Martha obtained her BA(Hons) in History from the University of Oxford in 2021. Having developed an appreciation of heritage buildings as a source for the study of history, she went on to obtain her MSc in Historic Building Conservation from Oxford Brookes University in 2023. This broadened her scope of understanding, with modules on architectural history, heritage best practice, and building pathology proving most interesting

Alongside her MSc studies, Martha worked as Conservation Assistant at Blenheim Palace. She became experienced at working within a heritage environment and honed her skills in the conservation and interpretation of the collection and historic interiors. This work required expertise in environmental monitoring software, digital cataloguing techniques, and condition reporting on various objects of various materials – skills which have proven useful in her work with H+R

Areas of Practice

Martha joined H+R in 2024, taking her understanding of heritage environments and materials and applying this to a more diverse range of buildings

She is most proficient in investigations regarding timber buildings, particularly those of a historic nature, and also flourishes in a roof void (on account of her rare ability to fit into crawl spaces). She can diagnose defects within timber through condition investigations both visually and with the assistance of a moisture meter and drill

Additionally, Martha is currently working up the ranks of IHBC membership, and aims to expand her heritage consultancy portfolio through gaining experience in writing statements of significance and conservation management plans, as well as researching and recording more historic buildings
