Thomas Duncan-Finn

Apprentice Building Pathologist

Background

Thomas is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree apprenticeship in Building Surveying at the University of the Built Environment in Reading. He has previously gained work experience with Historic England, where he was introduced to the principles of surveying, as well as building regulations and the building listing system. Additionally, he has completed a course focused on the repair and maintenance of traditional buildings, which taught him about the unique construction techniques and materials used in our national heritage.

His role at H+R marks his first practical foray into the building industry, and he has adapted well to this new environment. With nine months of practical experience with the company before formally starting his studies, he has already developed skills in sample analysis, Computer-Aided Design, and report writing. He has also acquired foundational knowledge in Building Pathology, which he is eager to deepen during his apprenticeship at H+R.

Areas of Practice

Thomas joined H+R at the beginning of 2025 as a Trainee Building Pathologist, having been introduced to the business at the 2024 Building Pathology Conference at Oxford Brookes University. Whilst he has only just begun his studies, he has been working at H+R for 9 months, which has provided him with a suite of skills. He aims to achieve chartered status with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and further achieve a conservation accreditation with the organisation afterwards.
